Dadli (2018), directed by Shabier Kirchner, is a lyrical 14-minute portrait of life in Antigua seen through the eyes of 13-year-old Tiquan White. Shot on 16 mm, the film captures the rhythms, beauty, and contradictions of island life, from the intimacy of local communities to the looming presence of the tourism industry. Blending documentary realism with poetic imagery, Dadli offers a tender, sensory meditation on home, heritage, and change.

Deep in the Amazon Rainforest of Ecuador lies the “Amazon Chernobyl”, a 1,700-square-mile environmental disaster brought on by oil extraction and production. After a visit to Ecuador in 1993, human rights lawyer Steven Donziger and other attorneys brought a class-action lawsuit against Texaco (later Chevron) on behalf of over 30,000 farmers and Indigenous people from this Amazon region who were affected by this disaster. Through his personal testimony and supporting footage, Steven recounts his experience advocating on behalf of the environment and affected communities and the personal toll this work has had on his life.

Winner for Outstanding Feature Story in Spanish in the 44th Annual News and Documentary Emmy® Awards.
In this episode of Rites of Passage, VICE travels down to Sinaloa, Mexico – El Chapo’s home turf & the heartland of arguably one of the most powerful cartels in the country, if not the world. There, we follow a pair of local, low-ranking members eager to prove themselves as soldiers and sicarios (hit men) for the Sinaloa cartel. Though they’re currently stuck making drug runs, tailing military trucks, & overseeing other petty assignments throughout the city of Culiacán, they’ll soon be headed to the mountains of Badiraguato to attend the cartel’s underground training camp, where veterans turn hungry young men into willing & able killers.
With never-before-seen, exclusive access to the intricate inner workings of the cartel’s recruitment and training systems, we’ll get a sense of how Mexico’s most powerful organized crime operations prepare their soldiers to wage war & enforce their dominion over their territory. We’ll also get inside the heads of the civilians willing to permanently give up everything for a shot at rising through the ranks – ultimately learning both how & why so many young men are sucked into a life of crime & bloodshed.

While the war on opioids rages on in America, meth is making a comeback. Legislation around the war on drugs has shifted dramatically in the decade since Congress first went after meth, with states like California passing laws that let people in the possession of meth back out on the street with just a ticket. Since the Patriot Act was passed, it’s become harder for meth manufacturers in the US to get their hands on the precursor chemicals to make the product, and with such huge demand, the manufacturing has moved to Mexico where production has exploded. Mexican cartels have begun mass-producing and exporting the deadly drug and meth has never been purer, cheaper, or more lethal as a result. This has had a major effect not only in the US but in Mexico as well, where meth labs are so ubiquitous that consumption from Mexican nationals is seeing a spike.
METH COUNTRY tracks the modern-day flow of meth from Mexico into the United States and the consumption of the drug in both countries. We start in Culiacán, Mexico in the meth labs of the Cartel, before following the drug to Fresno, CA—America’s “meth capital.” There, we talk to ex-Sinaloa mules, spend time with street-level dealers and addicts, and embed with law enforcement as they raid local stash houses. METH COUNTRY is a holistic look at meth’s violent and deadly comeback.
